Our way of life is being put to a hard test.
What was still ânormalâ 20 years ago is now being looked at with a frown on our faces. People considered leading an independent life decent.
Today, people are laughed at. Because they want to pay with cash in a restaurant. Or grow their own food.
There have always been human beings who wanted to go their own way. Who didn't believe everything the government promised them.
These weirdos are making a notable return to society today. They live simply, by their own rules, often without a TV or newspaper. They are in great physical health and pay attention to how they nourish their bodies. Those who think a self-reliant life is only possible in Alaska's forests are mistaken.
In this article, I'll show you how homesteading works in the city. Why this lifestyle makes sense. And how to start living a self-determined life. And why you will thrive by homesteading.
What is a Homesteader?
According to Wikipedia, homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of food, and may also involve the small scale production of textiles, clothing, and craft work for household use or sale.
Homesteading has been pursued in various ways around the world and throughout different historical eras. It is typically distinguished from rural village or commune living...
The keyword in the above section is "typically."
Yes, but not always. Because you don't need a farm. Or a house in rural Nirvana. You don't even need your own land. Because homesteading is a mindset. Your independence, free life doesn't need the borders of a fence. Or government's approval.
The only things you need are:
the will to thrive on your terms
the mindset to do so
some skills you will learn
a strong, logical way of thinking that will evolve and grow.
Do you think you have what it takes to become a free spirit? Let's dive in and give you some hard-boiled reasons why and how you can start today!
No Need for Space
Because homesteading takes place in your head, you don't need a lot of space. The size of your brain is a good place to start...! đ
If you make homesteading part of your lifestyle, you often don't need much more than a balcony or a terrace. Many vegetables, herbs, and even fruit thrive in pots.
Working with plants and animals in a small space also promotes creativity. Many amazing solutions in this area have started with a lack of space. And they work great in big cities too. For example, beekeeping on roof terraces.
Imagine the astonished faces of your friends when you gift them homemade honey for Christmas.
Food Is Everything...
Most human beings today no longer have a relationship with their food. In the supermarket, people buy what is cheap. The fast-food chain ensures mass processing and overpriced soft drinks with too much sugar. And the ice cream shop is often just a stone's throw away. Those who start thinking like homesteaders automatically change their attitudes towards food.
Because it matters.
Because YOU decide what fuel your body runs on:
either with nutrient-rich food that you have raised with your own energy
or with materials that do not deserve to be called food at all.
So what's stopping you from growing at least part of your own food?
...And Your Health Will Improve
Interestingly, humans who value their nutrition are rarely sick. Many medical experts today assume that 80% of illnesses depend on our diet and attitude toward food. So what we stuff ourselves with is super important.
As a homesteader, you become aware of the importance of food. And as if by magic, your physical and mental well-being improves.
You'll Start Asking the Important Questions
You can't just poison your body with junk food. You can also poison it with mass media, social media consumption, and toxic human beings. Homesteading takes energy. But it also gives you a lot more energy because you start to focus on the important things. Having conversations that make sense.
With people who give energy, not just take it.
You start to question so-called facts. Also because you have more energy. And because it is important to know the truth. Not everything presented in the news has ever happened. And it is questionable whether it even affects your life.
95% of the events we worry about never happen. So, worrying is a waste of time!
Money Talks - Even as a Homesteader
With the attitude of a homesteader, you are no longer willing to simply throw things away. You start to repair simple devices instead of disposing of them. Recycling becomes a predominant thought. Before every new buy, you consider whether the purchase is necessary at all.
Or whether it fits into your budget.
Of course, this has an impact on your wallet. You are much more aware of how you spend money. After all, money is a form of energy. How you use it is crucial. It can be for your benefit or very destructive.
The decision is yours.
Final Thoughts: Embrace the Homesteader's Mindset
Homesteading isn't just about growing your own food or living off the gridâit's about reclaiming control over your life. Itâs about breaking free from:
- societal norms.
- taking responsibility for your well-being,
- and building resilience, no matter where you live.
Whether you're in a small apartment or a house with a backyard, you can start today. The tools are simple: your mindset, your willingness to learn, and the courage to live differently.
By embracing the homesteaderâs way of thinking, you'll not only thrive physically and mentally. You'll also rediscover a deeper connection with the world around you.
Every small step towards self-reliance counts. Whether itâs planting herbs on your balcony or questioning the status quo. It empowers you to live life on your terms.
So, let me ask you: What's holding you back? The journey to thriving starts with a single step.
Take it today, and youâll be amazed at how far you can go.

So, so good. And as an example I am very seldom sick. The food I grow on the farm feeds my families and my animals. And we donât have a huge space. When I travel I plant and tend potted gardens on all my families terraces and porches. It is indeed a mindset.
