The 1 mistake that causes you to abandon your New Year's resolution every year, and how you can easily change it.
Yeah, I know time is running fast this year. Already March!
Let me guess - your New Year's resolution is already history. The gym membership you used only once. The new jogging pants are not even washed yet. And the menu plan you wanted to create is still just a template in your Canva homepage. It's like every year.
The frustration starts to build up and you sit in the kitchen thinking "Why I am so weak"?
Let me show you the single little piece that's missing - and it's not a lack of discipline.
Do you even know Why It Matters to you?
Sometimes we forget very easily why we made a New Year's resolution. And this is the main problem for your brain to focus.
Your brain and unconsciousness need a "WHY". Without clear instructions that led the way, I was never able to work on a set goal for more than 2-3 months. Until a mentor recommended writing on paper why I wanted to reach a certain achievement. This was the missing piece in the procedure I followed for years. And it is an eye-opener ever since.
Going through life without a defined WHY is almost a guarantee for failure. Only by writing down, you'll get the necessary insights into what motivates you in life.
To give you an example, let's pretend your New Year's resolution was to "establish a morning routine."
You probably read about some successful entrepreneurs with their specific habits.
And, of course, the arguments made sense. They convinced you. Such habits would be a game changer in your career.
To set a goal like this to work in the long run, you have to give your mind more reason. It's not enough to say to
wake up at 6 am,
meditate for 10 minutes and
going for a walk
is the new routine.
You have to write down the overarching "WHY". This could look somehow like this:
I want to live a productive life as a father of two girls, a loving husband, and a friend. To succeed in being a loving dad and partner I need the maximal amount of energy I can provide to my body. A more severe morning routine that supports my energy level will help me. The morning routine will give me time for myself so I can spend more time with my kids and family.
Blindingly obvious and easy if you think about it, isn't it?
Without giving your mind context it will try to stay in your already established habits. Changing habits or behavior absorbs a huge amount of energy. Your brain will do everything to avoid this "waste of energy". And will start to sabotage you. Trying to fight your brain is a lost cause from the beginning.
Get used to thinking about your goals as ideas you have to sell to your brain. If the arguments are good, helpful, and honest, they will be accepted.
Nothing will help you more in achieving your goals than a clear and sincere "Why". So, before you set the next goals, take a few minutes. Ask yourself, "Why would I want this to happen?"
New Year's resolutions will never be abandoned anymore.
See you soon,
Daniel
