“Your business will never be more successful than the condition of your body and mind. If you're running on fumes, so is your company.”
Hi,
Let’s face it - As an entrepreneur, you're focusing on everything.
On employees, key figures, customer satisfaction, product development, and marketing. Usually all at the same time.
Most of my entrepreneur colleagues, whom I meet often, neglect their most important asset: their bodies. And with it, their mind...
The Hidden Capital That Every Entrepreneur Overlooks
This article is written for you if you sometimes feel quite burnt out as an entrepreneur or solopreneur. Or even on the brink of disaster. I'll show you how natural laws can help you focus on what's really important. Namely, your body!
Entrepreneurship and success can be impressively explained using the example of a tree. This perspective has helped me in my business. Maybe you can pick some things from it and let them grow for your business.
But now, let's look at the parts of a business - as if it were a tree...
1. Roots: Health as a Foundation
Have you read this yet? We human beings now have an attention span smaller than that of a goldfish. The constant overstimulation with news, advertising and Epstein stories makes our brain as mushy as a dirt road after 5 days of rain... And that comes at a price. Many entrepreneurs feel increasingly overwhelmed and act like particles in the Hadron Collider. Chaotic.
There is a lack of stability and concentration everywhere.
A tree without strong roots? It will be blown over by the first storm. Just like an oak tree, an entrepreneur needs strong roots. In other words, a foundation. Our foundation consists of:
enough sleep
healthy nutrition
regular exercise
authentic existence
These four elements are non-negotiable. They belong in the mindset of every human being. Whether in business or in private.
Without these basics, long-term success is pure bingo. Maybe nature will draw the next number you need. But probably not.
How do you ensure a strong foundation from the start? You integrate small habits into your daily life. Daily routines that ground you.
That conveys well-being and security. Lifestyle choices that enable the body and mind to grow in the long term.
2. Photosynthesis: Energy From Light
The thirtieth call today, and e-mails still unanswered. And the new employee is already sick. Believe me, I know all about this from experience too.
We entrepreneurs are at particular risk of burnout because we never refuel. You give and do and listen. Constantly!
But far too rarely do you think about your empty tank. That you need to fill again.
Trees follow cycles. Day, night, sunshine, rain, wind. And they know how to refuel immediately like no other living creature. Trees literally use sunlight in seconds. When it is available. Photosynthesis is one of the most fascinating processes in nature. Trees can absorb light and convert it into energy.
Just as nature shows us, we should also “soak up light." You can do this literally and spend more time in nature and in natural light. Or you can do activities such as reading, listening to music, and walking. Self-care must become more important in the life of an entrepreneur. Otherwise, energy reserves deplete fast. Like a puddle in the summer heat.
3. Seasons of Growth: Adapting to Change
The laws of nature are simple: pressure creates counter-pressure. The salaries of employees, the rent, the leasing of the car, and much more. All these things create pressure.
Sometimes obviously. But mostly it is pressure that we do not consciously feel.
However, our body and brain are much more sensitive than we think. Performing and keeping a company on track is pressure. And like in a pressure cooker, this pressure sometimes needs to be released. Otherwise, an explosion is a matter of time.
Nature is very strict here and has set clear limits. Cycles such as the seasons are strictly adhered to by trees. It would never occur to a tree to grow in winter.
(You may have noticed that I am clearly talking about non-tropical conditions here. The inhabitants of such climate zones may forgive me!)
How can you ensure that you release pressure?
By building your own cycles. Depending on your industry, you know the times when your full attention is required. Be it spring, Easter, the start of the school year, Halloween, or Christmas time.
You know exactly when your company needs you most. The other times of the year, you have to plan time off. I'm not just thinking of family vacations (which all too often don't mean relaxation).
No, I mean strict “unreachable times." These can be retreats for reflection, creativity, or gathering ideas.
The famous cabin in the woods makes all the difference for many entrepreneurs!
4. Branching Out and Expansion: Building Networks
Do you sometimes feel lonely?
Even though you have twenty people working with you in the company? Yes, I know the feeling.
That dull feeling that no one here understands your problems. Despite being together all the time, you feel isolated.
It drains your energy. If you're conquering the world as a solopreneur, this feeling is even more prevalent. Because often there is an emptiness like in a black hole around you.
Somebody listening?
Understanding your problems? Nope - there's nobody.
The sun is to a tree what success is to you as an entrepreneur: the lifeline, that holds you above the water...
And just like a tree, we should stretch out our branches. To achieve our goals, we need a network.
The tree has its branches and twigs, which move into the right position.
We, human beings?
Very few of us are born with a promising network. You have to build it up and let it grow.
And I say this very consciously. Both privately and as a company.
A dense network of fruitful connections is a guarantee of well-being.
Strong relationships with customers, teams, and communities of all kinds are like the branches on a tree. Essential!
5. Resilience: Surviving Storms
Before a violent storm tears a tree to pieces, it bends it. Branches and tree trunks swaying in the wind are a fascinating spectacle. And a life lesson at the same time.
The elasticity of wood is impressive.
An entrepreneur faces storms from unforeseen challenges, competition, and personal setbacks. These storms will also shake you at some point. This is as certain as data encryption in a crypto network.
The only question is how you react to it. Will you be rigid, stubborn, and hard as steel, or flexible and resilient like a tree? No company in the world has gone under because of flexibility. However, many have gone under because of being inflexible. Remember Kodak or Nokia?
So the question is not “if” such challenges will come. But only "when." And how you react to them. The best defense against this stress is mental strength. Regular exercise, meditation, or simple breathing techniques can boost self-confidence. They help anyone face setbacks.
This makes you an entrepreneur who bends in difficult times - but never breaks.
Conclusion: Your Body and Mind - The Source of Your True Wealth
Running a business and going your own way are formidable challenges. You have to prepare yourself for them. We learn most quickly from our own mistakes. Unfortunately, our bodies don't allow us to make too many mistakes in the long run.
Those who still believe that they have to work harder and more to be successful will have a hard time. Our energy, both physical and mental, is like concert tickets. They're limited, just like the tickets for a Taylor Swift show. They are not infinite as many believe.
The biggest asset is not your skills. Nor is it the knowledge you bring to the table. And it certainly isn't what you were born with.
Your long-term success as an entrepreneur is essentially based on one skill:
