The Paralysis of Choice: A Café Encounter That Speaks Volumes
The young couple at my next table in the café looked stressed.
Once again, the young man kindly pointed to the menu with his index finger. She barely visibly shook her head. Her eyes did not light up.
He tried again.
"There's too much choice here".
She bowed her head and was on the verge of tears. "You can order a little something." He slammed the card shut and looked at his cell phone. There was no message to redeem him.
"Let's go somewhere else," she said in a conciliatory voice.
He stood up as if struck by lightning.
The chair tipped over and landed on the tiled floor with a loud bang. She closed the card as if in slow motion, placed it on the table, and didn't know what to do next. The first tear rolled down her made-up cheek.
"I didn't want that," he whispered and took her gently by the arm.
"I can't make up my mind," she said in an apologetic voice.
"Yes, I can see that. I don't understand what can be so hard about choosing a chicken salad or a business sandwich," he said. He helped her into her coat. She thanked him with a fleeting smile.
She hastily wiped the tears from her face and they left the restaurant.
Why does it feel sometimes so difficult to decide?
Not making decisions can lead to harmless situations. That's what happened above. Or they can even lead to life-threatening moments. The person affected is rarely aware of this.
One possible reason may be complete overload.
The seemingly endless possibilities of a menu can be overwhelming.
Especially for people who lack a clear sense of direction. This can lead to shutdown or avoidance behavior. They withdraw from decisions and commitments.
And leave the direction of their lives to others.
Without a goal, there is no right way to go
Those who go through life without a plan or a goal are usually guided by others sooner or later. If you want to enjoy a self-determined life, you can't avoid a little planning. Not irrevocable rules, but guard rails.
Every journey is more fun with an inner compass.
Especially the journey we call life.
