The Sleep Paradox for Business Dads: More Sleep Equals More Kids Time
When I started my second company, my son was 10 years old.
"Am I a good dad" is a question, most business dads are asking themselves at some point. Was I a good father during that time?
Certainly not always! Often, I was too busy not only with my company but also with myself. Not being able to maintain a healthy routine and beneficial habits, I struggled with sleep issues. A lot. Suffered the boy because of my dizziness and non-presence? He did - sometimes.
Being a dad, building a company, or being heavily absorbed in a corporate career - all at the same time - isn't beneficial for healthy sleep. But, learning how important sleep actually is, opened my eyes.
It made me an advocate for sleep patterns and routines. And the resulting benefits are what we want to discover in this post.
Improved Focus and Energy.
Getting enough sleep is crucial.
You know best what is "enough" for you. If you feel unbeatable like Iron Man after an 8-hour non-stop sleep - that's what you should aim for. Make it happen.
If you have to incorporate a nap during your day - do it.
Maintaining high levels of focus and energy throughout the day is the goal.
It's not about feeling less tired. It's about being fully present when you're with your family. The ability to give your full attention to your children's stories, games, and questions makes every moment spent with them more valuable.
The kids will remember the dad who was present in their world - not the one who was always around.
Better Emotional Regulation
Let's get honest here.
If you're dealing with a career or your own business you're dealing with a lot of shit too! There are days full of frustration and sometimes pure anger. Having such days after a short night - good luck.
Kids have a sensible antenna and they will avoid you. It's not what you want.
A night of good sleep helps you manage emotions better.
When you're well-rested, you're less likely to snap at minor irritations. It affects how you react to the inevitable challenges of parenting. As a business dad, you want to opt for a more patient approach to parenting.
Your emotional regulation makes home a happier place for everyone and you're strengthening the connection with your kids.
Increased Productivity at Work
When you accomplish more in less time, you can afford to clock out earlier or feel less stressed about taking time off.
This is crucial for business dads looking to spend more time with their children. Create these opportunities for more frequent and meaningful interactions with your family. It's a win-win situation where both your work and family life benefit.
And even the dog will be happier!
Enhanced Quality Time with Kids
I mentioned it before.
Quality trumps quantity when it comes to time spent with your children. Well-rested dads are more creative, playful, and attentive, making unforgettable memories.
Nothing is more important. Building strong bonds and shared moments lasts a lifetime. It's about making sure the time you do have together is as memorable as possible. The family camping tour, the holidays in the wood cabin, you know what your family needs.
You, your partner, and the kids will never forget about it.
Setting a Positive Example
A completely underestimated but increasingly important point!
Being a dad with routines, healthy habits, and family-friendly time management sets standards. You're a healthy example for your children. They learn the importance of self-care and managing their own time effectively.
This, dear dads, is the opportunity to teach valuable life lessons that last.
Your actions show them that while work is important, taking care of oneself is equally crucial.
Kids will see it as a gift that will serve them well throughout their lives. What could be more meaningful?
You are in charge of giving the next generation the tools and habits for a healthy life in their hands. Each of these points emphasizes how critical sleep is for business dads. Not only for your health and productivity but for the quality of the time you spend with your kids. You are the benchmark.
And they will respect you for that.
You set the foundation for a happier, more balanced family life. I'm quite sure you can do better than I did.
Grow that business with passion and with your family in mind.
Your "sleep prioritizing" friend,
Daniel
