What You Can Learn From a Handshake—Without Having a PhD in Psychology
Last week, I was invited to a nice reception...
…at a company I recently started working with.
The kind of event where you shake hands a lot.
And holy cow!
👋 Hey, Hello!
The signals I received ranged from a warm “Hey, I really want to know you better” to an uncomfortable “OMG, why is this guy touching me?”
At first, I didn’t think much of it. But as the night went on, a pattern started to emerge.
People reveal more through their handshake than they probably realize.
Why Does a Handshake Even Matter?
We greet people all the time. Be it colleagues, potential business partners, and strangers at networking events. But most of us don’t put much thought into our handshake.
Big mistake!
Because whether we like it or not, a handshake is a micro-interaction.
One that leaves a lasting impression. It’s a non-verbal cue that can communicate:
confidence,
trustworthiness,
hesitation, or even
dominance—all within a few seconds.
Ever met someone whose handshake was so weak it felt like holding a soggy noodle?

What about the opposite—the bone-crusher that made you question your hand’s survival?
Those aren’t just random styles.
They say a lot about a person’s mindset.
What Can You Actually Learn From a Handshake?
A handshake isn’t just a greeting—it’s a personality preview.
Weak and limp? Could signal insecurity, hesitation, or disinterest.
Overly aggressive, like a vice grip? Maybe overcompensation or an attempt to dominate.
A relaxed, firm grip? Usually a sign of confidence, warmth, and emotional balance.
Now, of course, context matters.
Someone with arthritis might have a weak grip for physical reasons. And a super-firm handshake might just be cultural (speak non-city).
But in general, a handshake reveals more than words ever could.
How Can You Improve Yours?
Perfecting your handshake isn’t complicated, but it does require awareness.
✅ Firm, but not aggressive – Apply light pressure, but don’t crush bones.
✅ Make eye contact – A handshake without eye contact is like texting "K."—cold and dismissive.
✅ Match their energy – Slightly mirror the other person’s grip (without turning it into a power struggle).
✅ One shake, then release – Nobody likes a lingering handshake. It's a greeting, not a test of endurance.
What If You Started Paying Attention?
Next time you shake someone’s hand, pause and observe. What does their grip tell you? How does yours feel in return?
Because here’s the thing—confidence isn’t just about how you speak, stand, or act. It’s in the smallest details, like the way you shake someone’s hand. A handshake can be the first signal that you’re in control, self-assured, and ready to take on the world.
Or… it can say the opposite.
That's why today's issue of The Fearless YOU is here.
It helps you become a more confident and fearless you, one small but powerful step at a time.
So, what does your handshake say about you? 😉

Great article, Daniel!
Psychological hand analysis is one of my areas of expertise. We interpret hand forms, finger forms, finger lengths, skin texture, skin complexion, color, finger nails, wrist, mounts, lines, hand gestures, .... and, as part of hand gestures, hand shakes. In fact, hand shakes reveal much more than you talk about ... but what you suggest is a good start of sensitizing people to this important and valuable topic! ;)
