Confidence Isn’t What You Think It Is
Ever think confident people are born that way? Yeah, I used to believe that too. But let me tell you (me, whispering): confidence isn’t a magical personality trait reserved for a lucky few.
It’s a skill. And like any skill, you can learn, practice, and hone it.
But first, let’s cut the bullshit. Forget the "fake-it-till-you-make-it" mantra! Or other risky life hacks promising overnight transformations. Confidence built on shaky ground will crumble the second things go south.
Let’s talk about real ways to build confidence— the ones that stick.
1. Stop Comparing: Start Owning Your Shit
Comparison is the thief of joy. And your confidence. Scrolling through Instagram can make your life seem like a joke. Other people's highlight reels can feel overwhelming. Been there, done that. But confidence starts way before on that road.
With accepting who you are right now.
How to stop the comparison game:
Audit your social media. Unfollow anyone who makes you feel less. Your mental health is worth more than their aesthetic feeds.
Practice gratitude. Write down three things you love about your life. Do this daily. It rewires your brain. And focuses on the good.
Celebrate your wins. Big or small. Did you ace that meeting? Great! Managed to meal prep? Cool. Give yourself some damn credit.
2. Face the Fear and Do It Anyway
Confidence isn’t about eliminating fear. No. That would be impossible and naive to think. It’s about taking action. Despite the imminent fear. Public speaking used to make my palms sweat. Think Sauna-like sweat...
But the more I did it, the less terrifying it became.
Try this:
Take small steps. Networking events feel for some like walking into a burning oven. Take it slow. Start by introducing yourself to one new person. Don't choose the main sponsor, aka the CEO of the biggest company in the room. Remember: Baby steps.
Create a mantra. Something like, “I’ve got this,” or “I'm getting better at this every day”
Reflect on past wins. You have to fool your memory. We're better at keeping the bad stuff. But remember the last time you thought you’d fail. But you didn’t? Let that memory fuel you. It's better than an energy drink, anyway!
3. Ditch the Negative Self-Talk
Your inner critic can be a real asshole. At least mine was. “You’re not smart enough,” “You’ll never succeed,” blah blah blah. Time to shut that voice up. Forever!
Here’s how:
Name it. Literally give your inner critic a name. Mine’s “Karen the Bitch.” Don't laugh. It's true (ok, I have a secret German word for her... Because speaking with your Self should always be in your mother tongue). Whenever she pipes up, I tell her to sit the fuck down.
Flip the script. Replace “I’m terrible at this” with “I’m learning and getting better every day.”
Keep receipts. Write down compliments or positive feedback you’ve received. Collect them like a squirrel collects nuts! But unlike them, remember where you stored them. Read them when doubt creeps in.
4. Build Competence to Fuel Confidence
Gurus try to make it a mystery. But here’s the not-so-secret secret: confidence grows when you get good at something. It's that easy. Mastery leads to belief in your abilities. Valid in all areas.
Steps to build competence:
Pick a skill. Want to feel more confident at work? Choose a specific skill to improve. Like public speaking. Attend Toastmaster Meetings. Or become the AI wizard in the company. Or whatever you would like to be "better at."
Set mini-goals. Break it down into manageable tasks. Use realistic time frames. Mastering one thing at a time builds momentum.
Practice, practice, practice. Repetition is and will always remain the cornerstone of familiarity. And that my friend fosters confidence. Nothing else. Not reading a book about it. Not listening to a podcast. No. Practice is the magic word.
5. Get Comfortable with Discomfort
You heard it a hundred times. But it's true. Growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zone. The more you challenge yourself, the more resilient and confident you become.
Ways to stretch your comfort zone:
Say “yes” more. Opportunities often come disguised as scary things. Say yes, and figure it out later. That salsa dance course with a friend? The Wednesday Evening cooking party in your local community? Find the opportunities. Go for them!
Seek feedback. It might sting, but constructive criticism is a goldmine for growth.
Embrace failure. Every setback is a setup for a comeback. Learn, adjust, and keep moving.
6. Surround Yourself with Positive Vibes
Confidence is contagious. Spend time with people who lift you up. Not tear you down. These are the ones you don't need in your life. They're like tiny vampires. Constantly sucking your blood.
Here’s how:
Find your hype squad. Friends who genuinely celebrate your wins are priceless. Prefer real life. But you can build friendships online too.
Join communities. Whether it’s a running club, a book group, or an online forum. Find like-minded folks who support your growth. Listen. We already lack human interactions! Take these words as a sign to change this part of your life. It matters.
7. Take Care of Your Body
The most obvious at the end. Mind and body are connected. When you feel good physically, it translates into mental confidence.
Actionable steps:
Move daily. Exercise releases endorphins that boost your mood and confidence. Even a 10-minute walk in the park works wonders.
Fuel your body. Ditch the junk food (and especially the sugars!) for whole, nourishing meals.
Rest up. Sleep isn’t a luxury. No, you can't recover when you're dead. Sleep is a necessity for a sharp, confident mind.
Confidence Is Like Breadcrumbs on Your Path
You won’t wake up tomorrow bursting with unshakable confidence. And frankly, that would be scary. Building confidence is a journey. Picking up the little small steps at a time. Start where you are. With what you’ve got. And for God's sake! Have a little faith in you. And trust the process. You’ve got this.

Solid! I loved every word. And your writing, thank you!!
Great write up. Very solid list. I would add bring yourself to the moment when you feel anxious or restless. Take a moment to breathe in and exhale, and take in the noises and feelings of your surroundings. You can go from stress to calm in seconds. And you can add the small victories and gratitude.
